Mitsubishi will soon finally be able to take advantage of its alliance with Nissan by using one of the platforms offered by the latter to design an all-new 100% electric model.
Mitsubishi has built a solid reputation in the electrified vehicle segment thanks to the Outlander PHEV, which remains a benchmark in its class. However, the Japanese automaker has not offered a fully electric vehicle since the departure of the i-MiEV.
A Vehicle Based on the Leaf
Although the Japanese manufacturer has shared very few details on the matter, it is known that Mitsubishi will soon unveil a new fully electric model based on the next-generation Nissan Leaf platform.
As you may already know, the Nissan Leaf will change its form in 2026, evolving from a small hatchback into an SUV. Therefore, we can expect a similar format for Mitsubishi\'s new fully electric vehicle.
According to current online rumors, this new platform could offer an average range of over 300 miles, or about 482 kilometers on a full charge. However, it appears that all-wheel drive will not be part of the offering. This is an important point, as it’s what will likely allow Nissan and Mitsubishi to offer a smaller vehicle at a more competitive price—something that is currently sorely lacking in the electric vehicle segment.
Among the many advantages of this new platform is its compatibility with NACS-type chargers, meaning buyers will have access to Tesla’s charging network.
The name of this new model has yet to be revealed, but all signs suggest that the Japanese automaker might revive a name from the past. It wouldn’t be surprising to see the Lancer name make a comeback. Needless to say, this is a vehicle we’re eagerly awaiting.
