First and foremost, if you don't know what a PHEV is, let's clarify this. PHEV stands for Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle. Let me tell you why I think the Mitsubishi Outlander is among the best options in this category, even if the competition got more robust in the past few years.

The Mitsubishi Outlander was one of the first SUVs to introduce PHEV technologies into the segment, and it has been the best-selling PHEV SUV in the world, which means a lot. This gave Mitsubishi the time to learn and study PHEV technology; therefore, it matters here. This experience allowed Mitsubishi to go even further into developing the Outlander PHEV.

Improved Technologies

There is a lot to talk about the 2022 Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV technical aspect but let's start with what is under the hood. The Japanese SUV is powered by a combination of a 2.4 L 4 cylinders and two electric motors for a combined power of 221 hp, which is more than enough, to be honest. It is essential to mention this because the total hp of each engine is far more critical. The 2.4 L 4 cylinders make 126 hp and 147 foot-pounds of torque. The front EV motor produces 80 hp and 101 foot-pounds of torque. Finally, the rear EV motor makes 94 hp and 144 foot-pounds of torque.

Also, if you didn't notice at this point, the 2022 Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV is equipped with the legendary S-AWC or Super All-Wheel-Control system, if you prefer. In contrast, most PHEV vehicles are only available with a front-wheel-drive configuration. This allows the Japanese SUV to offer several driving modes going from fully electric to a mode where you can use the gas motor to produce electricity for the 2 EV motors. The gas motor can also move the wheels when more power is required.

When I say that experience does matter, I have one key feature in mind. If most PHEV vehicles are compatible with level 1 and level 2 charging stations, only a few are compatible with level 3 chargers. As you have probably guessed, the 2022 Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV is one of them, and this is a massive advantage over the competition. A Level 1 charger is comparable to any outlet you have at home. It takes around 9 hours for the Outlander PHEV to be fully charged on a level 1 charger. Level 2 is a bit faster with 4 hours. A 240 V outlet is technically considered a level 2 charger, but you need a special charger at home to get this kind of power to your car, or you can always go to pretty much any charging station. A Level 3 charger is far most interesting, especially when you go shopping or to a restaurant, since it takes only 25 minutes on average to get an 80% charge. I love the whole idea of a Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle, but the fact that most of them are not compatible with a level 3 chargers give me headaches, and I'm sure I'm not the only one. Therefore the 2022 Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV is far up on my list.

A Better Choice

Yet another interesting fact about the 2022 Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV is its warranty. Most of the vehicle is covered by a five-year/100 000km warranty, and anything in the powertrain category is covered by a ten-year/100 000km warranty. This proves how much Mitsubishi trusts its product and makes an excellent purchase point.

Mitsubishi is about to launch the new generation Outlander PHEV which should be out on the market by the end of the year. Seeing how good the current-gen Outlander PHEV is, I cannot wait to see the new one.
